Update: Why I Have Been Absent

December 17th, 2007 I rushed to my Mother’s side (she is 85) in the hospital. She is much better now and recovering from pneumonia. Between December 17 - February 7th I was only home a total of 10 days.

Busy Days

February 8th my niece accompanied her on a flight to Edmonton and has since made the decision to make Edmonton her home again. Which makes me, the grand children, and her great grand children happy since we will all see a lot more of her now.

In the last 20 days, I sold her home in Kelowna, found an Assisted Living facility she can move into May 1st and finally found Personal Care Attendant to help her in her recovery.

Self-Employment Flexibility

Fortunately, I have had the time and flexibility to reorganize my work and personal life. IMO flexibility is the single greatest benefit to being an entrepreneur.

What I Learned

Having to maintain my business far from home, provide home care, and organize the downsizing (from 1,600 sq. ft. to 512 sq. ft.) of my Mother’s home - makes for an extremely focused individual. I have been amazed at how much I have been able to get done.

Note to Self: Greg, you can do so much more than you think and you will never know what is truly possible until you get outside of your comfort zone.

Apple is Brilliant and Crazy Stupid at the Same Time

February 19, 2008

I don’t get it. How can a company be so brilliant and progressive and stupid?

I got an iPod Touch for my birthday. Love the iPod Touch. I am using it as a mobile extension of desktop computer. I noticed that when I enter a contact into the iPod Touch it does not sync with Address Book. Thinking it was a bug, I called Apple.

I was surprised to learn that they only support syncing from the computer to the iPod Touch. I was dumbfounded. When I enter a appointment on the iPod Touch it adds it to my iCal calendar what is the big deal with contacts?

I realize that the iPhone and iPod Touch are the first devices to support data entry on the device itself but geez Louise this makes no sense at all.

Anyone out there figure out how to get your contacts from the iPod Touch into Address Book?

A Woman’s Perspective On Building A Business

February 12, 2008

This Business Week article draws distinctions about women and how they build businesses. I think the observations are valid based on my own coaching experience but it is not just women who are starting a business because they want control over their lifestyle, wanting more freedom, flexibility, and control.

For example, they [women] manage growth so that they have more freedom, work three to four days a week, or choose not to have employees added to their responsibility of having a family at home. Or they might not borrow a large amount of money and instead grow their business slowly and organically—in many cases, on purpose. Via Rethinking How Women Build Businesses

cycling business womanPerhaps it’s my unique perspective as a business coaching practitioner. The women I have known in business have always been more focused on their roles (wife, mother, entrepreneur) and responsibilities and building a business to garner more flexibility than a traditional job.

Women Are Pragmatic and Tenacious Visionaries

I absolutely find it a joy to coach women in business. They always have a clear vision of the results they want and are naturally pragmatic.

Men Tend To Dream of the Possibilities

I am seeing more men beginning to think about lifestyle control and options when building a business. In my experience men are the dreamers and less pragmatic than women.

I am not saying that the way women approach business is better than the way men develop a business - it is just different. Just like anything, there are always exceptions to every assumption.

I have to say that men could take a page from the womens’ playbook - being more pragmatic - and it would be very potent and powerful combination. Just think about it, dreamer, possibilities, pragmatic visionary.

Sincerely,

Greg Balanko-Dickson

February 12, 2008

This morning I had the pleasure of being on the Be Happy Dammit show hosted by Karen Salmansohn with my Joyful, Jubilant Learning buddies including Benjamin Bach, Phil Gerbyshak, EM Sky and Steve Sherlock. What a great way to start the day!

It could take a week or two for the show to make it online, know that I will post a link to it when it does become available.

In the last segment of the show Read more
