Have you ever wondered what your break even point is? Well wonder no more. You can edit this spreadsheet and add your own numbers! Try it, the spreadsheet will recalculate immediately. For more information scroll down to read the notes below the spreadsheet.
Break Even
The break even analysis depends on four specific variables:
- The fixed production costs for a product.
- The variable production costs for a product.
- The product’s unit price.
- The product’s expected unit sales (sometimes called projected sales)
The Break Even calculation is the number of units that must be sold in order to produce a profit of zero (but recover all related costs).
Break Even = Fixed Cost / (Unit Price - Variable Unit Cost)
Understanding Break Even
While your break even can vary from month to month this tool can be used to calculate the sales volume required to recover all the variable and fixed costs associated with producing your product or service.
After your break even point, you begin to earn profit. This tool is a great aid when trying to make strategic decisions including price levels, determining the most favorable combination of fixed and variable costs.
Notice that each time you change a parameter in the Break-Even Analysis, the break-even unit volume changes, and so does your risk. If you have questions, leave a comment.

Break Your Mental Constipation
October 27, 2005
I am reading the book Jump Start Your Business Brain by Doug Hall. On page 192 he asks a series of questions:
- What have you done to stimulate your brain?
- How many hobbies have you engaged in?
- How many physical activities?
He says that regardless of your numbers it is time to ramp up your activity and makes the following suggestions:
- Read a magazine of book that you normally wouldn’t bother with.
- Exercise your body, it stimulates the brain and impacts your ability to think smarter and more creatively.
- Create a craft project you would not normally do.
- Learn a new skill or take a class.
- Cook a meal from scratch.
- Enjoy music and all kinds. Try a podcast.
- Experience new people and engage in meaningful conversations.
- Write your thoughts on paper.
- Travel to a foreign destination.
- Visit museums.
Use it or Loose It
To invent dramatically different ways to grow your business, your brain has to be in shape. Exercise it, give it a work out!
Inventor Fraud
October 25, 2005
I found a promising website that has a good list of resources and information relating to Inventor Fraud. The home page states:
Michael S. Neustel, a U.S. Registered Patent Attorney, founded the National Inventor Fraud Center, Inc. (NIFC) with the goal to provide information to consumers about invention promotion companies and how people can market their ideas. Many inventors do not realize that some invention marketing companies charge thousands of dollars, yet have success rates of 0.00%. The goal of the NIFC is to educate and help inventors make the right decisions. The NIFC is owned by Neustel Law Offices, LTD.
The website lists judgments, court decisions and successful lawsuits in favor of inventors. Well worth a visit.
Am I a lazy writer?
October 24, 2005
I often get asked why I share so much information and write so much. Frankly, it does not seem like much to me. I guess it is just the way I am wired.
I Started Writing Out of Frustration
The real reason I started writing online and sharing business information, tips and articles and now book’s is because there is just so much crap in the small business space.
For example, this morning I was doing some research online (for my next book on business planning) to see what I could learn about business planning from an inventors perspective. I am disappointed to say that all I could find were outlines, lawyers, and listings about scam artists trying to lift money from inventors pockets. Worse Google has a huge issue with Splogs (over-optimized, short on content spam blogs) who at best give a topic a cursory treatment purely to milk easy money from Google Adsense.
For the business owner who just wants good information on running their business better, it can be a disappointing and frustrating experience.
So Few Really Understand How To Connect with Readers
Just like anything else in this world if you share your knowledge, help people solve problems with quality content, it says something positive about you and your business. That is called branding, good business and being a good citizen.
It is easy to write, it is hard work to write with quality, meaning and substance. It is even harder to write so that someone keeps reading.
Write To Impress
I was thinking about Lorelle’s post about ‘impressing her‘ and if you do, she promises to interview five winners and write a profile about you on her blog.
As she says, if you can impress her, other people reading your blog will be impressed too. Isn’t that the point? To earn the right to be read, admired, and trusted? That requires writing with a purpose.
I am Guilty
Sure I am busy writing another book with a December deadline, launching my coaching business, and coaching clients. Yet, I get caught up in the daily rush and sometimes short shrift writing with purpose.
If you ever feel like I have missed the mark, let me have it!
Let’s get it ‘write’, OK?
NOTE: I just had to rewrite this post to make it worth your time.
