News junkies: Every headline is our toke, every cutline is our crack. A true news junkie doesn’t stop at just one app, feed, or source; s/he wants them all. Thankfully, your iPhone or iPod touch can be your connection to news from your community and from around the world.

What Google is Saying About Social Web

September 16, 2008

Last week it was great to see Google at Bear Hug Camp. Like a good citizen they were collaborating on how to integrate Twitter with Google Chat etc.

The promise of the social web is about making it easy to share the small stuff — to make it effortless and rebuild that feeling of connectedness that comes from knowing the details….It will be great when the instant I think of something to tell my friends, or something I need from my friends, they’re available to me in some way.   Remember when Google embedded IM into Gmail, and you could suddenly see — without changing applications — that the friend you were about to email was online and easily reachable right at that second? …Now, many sites and services are adding even more sophisticated plumbing (like profiles and friends and presence and comments) that brings the immediacy of social interaction to more and more places on the web….We — meaning Google and many others in the web community — are in the midst of a burst of energy around all things social that is teaching us more every day about what people want to do with their friends and where. …What are the big plumbing problems — like contact portability, or standards for user authentication and authorization — that need to be solved for the whole web because no one site can do it on its own?Google is chipping in on all of these fronts, listening closely to our users to make our existing products more social in useful ways, and by working with the web community on software projects like OpenSocial and OAuth to address some of the big infrastructure challenges that are best solved in the open, with the perspective of many developers and website owners represented.   Fast forward ten years, and you’ll feel even more at home on the web than you do today – because it will be a pretty good reflection of you. Twitter attended then left. Not sure if they ever came back or not.Laconica is an open source micro blogging application that apparently Leo Laporte is using with his TWiT Army. Identi.ca was also built upon Laconica.Do you twitter? If so, what do you think of it?

Hooked on the Bubble Cycle

May 3, 2008

Fascinating article over on Harpers, The next bubble: Priming the markets for tomorrows big crash. Reading to the end of the article, this paragraph really stood out…

That the Internet and housing hyperinflations transpired within a period of ten years, each creating trillions of dollars in fake wealth, is, I believe, only the beginning. There will and must be many more such booms, for without them the economy of the United States can no longer function. The bubble cycle has replaced the business cycle. (emphasis is mine)

This article was written in February 2008 and makes a cogent and rational argument that is wrapped up at the end showing how Alternative Energy could be the next bubble. The point to remember is this, forget about the business cycle, watch the bubble cycle and plan your business strategy to leverage growth of the new bubble – alternative energy.

Stagflation A Reality

Stagflation Defined: A period of time characterized by high inflation and recessionary conditions.

I live in Edmonton, Alberta and we are experiencing stagflation already here in Alberta. Housing value on our home grew 100% in three years. The tar sands, the second largest deposit of oil is just north or us in Ft. Mcmurray which has been fueling growth here for decades.

We will need to control our spending, reinvent our business models, and go after new sources of income from the innovators of new “bubble”.

The New Bubble: Watch for the Declining Market in Iraq

A sign that the alternative energy bubble is upon us will be marked by a decline in the Iraq market.

In a hyperinflation, infrastructure upgrades will accelerate, with plenty of opportunity for big government contractors fleeing the declining market in Iraq. Thus, we can expect to see the creation of another $8 trillion in fictitious value, which gives us an estimate of $20 trillion in speculative wealth, money that inevitably will be employed to increase share prices rather than to deliver “energy security.” When the bubble finally bursts, we will be left to mop up after yet another devastated industry. FIRE, [The new economy belonged to finance, insurance, and real estate—FIRE.] meanwhile, will already be engineering its next opportunity. Given the current state of our economy, the only thing worse than a new bubble would be its absence.

Bring on the bubble!
